I think about our ability as coaches, as leaders, is to expand the mindset, the thought process, the thought provocation of our people that we're coaching, whether they be clients or employees. I think about our ability to get people to think and look at things differently. You know, I did something at a client site years ago and I probably should get back to it and it was a program that we created called Always Stay Positive, and every day, everybody had to watch a video a video, basically, of something that was positive, inspirational, motivational videos, or even sound clips or quotes and we did it for 21 days and what we had to do is we sent it out and everybody had to journal what was their major takeaway, not what was their impression, because people will easily be negative. Well, I think this was dumb. They'll find ways to discount, but we framed our questions to be positive, such as what are two things you took away from this positively? And so we went back to the leaders of the employees and we said what have you noticed? And we pulled I think it was about 12 managers and all 12 said it's a noticeable difference. Here's the lesson with content-driven coaching Content fuels people's minds when you watch the six o'clock news, especially during election time. Does anyone really get invigorated when you watch the 6 o'clock news and we think about things all around the world where there are challenges? What does the news report? Challenges, wars, tough times for people. We don't really have a 30 to 60-minute positive news channel, do we? That's mainstream. That fuels people's minds.
Speaker 1:So recently I was coaching someone who is really kind of lackluster. They don't know what they want to do with their career and I said what do you do for enjoyment? He said what I said what do you do for fun? And he started talking about a sport that he plays. I said that's awesome. So how does that person come into the workplace? So I've never thought of that. And I said so answer the question. He started laughing. He goes, I don't know. His tone changed. I said so what do you listen to when you drive into work? He said the radio. I said music. He said mostly. I said just kind of lackluster, kind of like you just go, you just listen to the song and that's kind of it. You, you just listen to the song and that's kind of it. You get to work and you think what I got a long day ahead of myself and he kind of sighs. And I said so I want to try something. I said I want you to listen to something positive. I want you to listen to something positive for the next 30 days no music, no news. And then I want you to think about two things of what you're going to do, to just be helpful to other people. So at the end of the 30 days I said what did you learn? What happened? What was your major takeaway? He said boy, everybody seems so much nicer to me.
Speaker 1:See, when people get caught up in their own stuff, we tend to think about ourselves like, yeah, I'm feeling this way or, you know, I'm just not that energetic. We don't think about other people. We certainly do not take the time and reflect and say you know, I should fuel my brain positively. So when you use content, try it with your team, try it with your team. Try, every time you have a staff meeting, to lead with something inspirational and just let it sit. This is powerful. When you use content and you create content that inspires and motivates, guess what happens? People start to feel different. Their willingness goes up, their transparency, their openness goes up. Not full-time, I get it, but find that content. Find that content that is in alignment with what you're trying to achieve, and then, when you start to fuel people's brains, guess what happens.
